Spotlight: Caven Point – Janitorial Services
Grounded in Service: North Jersey Friendship House and Its Long-Standing Federal Janitorial Contracts
For more than two decades, North Jersey Friendship House (NJFH) has been a trusted partner in federal custodial services under the AbilityOne Program—a unique initiative that creates meaningful employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities through federal contracting.
Caven Point — A Two-Decade Legacy
Since 2004, NJFH has proudly operated the custodial services contract at Caven Point in Jersey City. Over nearly 22 years, this partnership has done more than maintain clean and safe federal facilities—it has created steady employment and skill-building opportunities for adults with disabilities.
For many years, the Caven Point contract was led by Joe Roman, whose dedication helped foster a supportive and structured work environment where individuals could grow, gain confidence, and take pride in their contributions. Today, Caven Point remains an active part of NJFH’s Janitorial Services program. A cleaning crew led by an NJFH Janitorial Supervisor continues to service the facility each week, with an additional building expected to come online soon—further expanding opportunities for meaningful work.
Over the life of the contract, an estimated 15–20 individuals with disabilities have been employed at Caven Point. This longevity reflects the powerful, long-term impact this partnership has had on the lives of NJFH members.
Newark Airport — From Transition to Stability
In April 2011, NJFH expanded its AbilityOne portfolio by assuming the janitorial contract for control facilities at Newark Liberty International Airport. The contract was transitioned from another agency that could no longer maintain the work, and NJFH ensured continuity of both service and employment.
Over the past 14+ years, NJFH has employed four individuals with disabilities through this contract. Two employees transitioned from the previous agency and continued their employment under NJFH’s support until their retirement in 2015. In the years that followed, NJFH welcomed two new employees, both of whom remain dedicated members of the airport custodial team today. Their continued service represents the stability, commitment, and opportunity that the AbilityOne Program makes possible.
