Spotlight: Every Story Matters: George's Journey to Spectrum Designs

When George started Project SEARCH, he struggled with self-confidence, communication, and patience. Today, he works 16 hours a week independently at Spectrum Designs. Read how he got there in his own words.

When George first started with Project SEARCH at North Jersey Friendship House, he struggled with self-confidence, communication, and patience. He was uncomfortable working with other interns and became easily frustrated.

Finding His Footing

Adult Project SEARCH is a workplace immersion program designed to prepare interns for competitive integrated employment with coaching from staff who believe in their potential. For George, that support made all the difference.

George was very responsive to the staff's support and reminders to work the program, ask questions when needed, and try to engage with his peers. Staff welcomed his ideas and his opinions.

He received positive feedback from his internship department heads. Over time, the Project SEARCH team watched George's confidence grow and his patience with challenges grow right along with it.

Knowing What He Wanted

George always knew where he hoped to land. In employment team meetings, he said it clearly and often: he wanted to work for a graphic design company.

It was work he first discovered during an internship in his last year of high school, and he never lost sight of that goal.

The Right Fit

Today, George works 16 hours a week independently at Spectrum Designs.

From preparing garments to keeping up with a busy production floor, George brings focus and care to every task. The young man who once found teamwork uncomfortable is now a valued member of a busy workplace.

In His Own Words

"The extra support and training at Project SEARCH gave me the skills and confidence needed to gain employment. I believe I found the right place to work. They were able to give me the accommodations I needed to be the best at my job. And they keep me busy."
